Gunji Koizumi is known as the 'Father of British Judo. He was the founder of the Budokwai in London. He was a Japanese master of judo who introduced this martial art to the United Kingdom and became a pioneer in England. Koizumi, was a driving force in establishing the EJU, initially before the Second World War and then, more lastingly, in 1948, as well as the setting up of the IJF in 1951. Gunji Koizumi was a key figure to the pioneering vision. Koizumi's suicide in 1965 shocked the judo world.
