South Africa celebrates first continental gold since 2014

South Africa’s Geronay Whitebooi delighted the home crowd by claiming the women’s U48 kilograms gold medal on the opening day of the African Senior Judo Championships in Cape Town. Whitebooi beat Algeria’s Hadjer Mecerem in the final at Cape Town University's Indoor Sports Hall. It was for the first time since 2014 South African won a continental title. Read more

African youth championships won by Tunisia

Tunisia was the strongest nation at the African Judo Championships for both juniors as cadets. Egypt followed in the medal table in the junior category, Algeria was second in the cadets. Nonetheless in both age division Tunisia seems to have the best generation of talents. But there was a big difference in men and women as in the women Tunisia was strong but Egypt has the stronger men with four gold medals. Read more

Taciana Lima Cesar captures fifth African title

The first title of the African Championships is traditionally reserved for Taciana Cesar of Guinee-Bissau. Cesar nee Lima, won her fifth consecutive African title. In the final in Madagascar she won by ippon against Olfa Saoudi, a repetition of last year’s final in Tunis. The 33-year old Cesar was Pan American Champion in 2001. In 2013 she switched from Brazil to Guinee-Bissau. Read more
