Turkish judoka Mert Sismanlar became European Cadet Champion in 2017 in Kaunas. He won the European Cup Cadets Antalya in 2017. He captured a bronze medal at the 2018 Junior World Championships in the Bahamas. He claimed a bronze medal at the Junior European Cup in Berlin in 2019. He captured a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Marrakech in 2019.

Everyone was expecting to see the defending world junior champion, Gela Zaalishvili (GEO), in the final of the Junior World Championships, but he was quickly eliminated by Matsumura Sosuke (JPN), on a superb ura-nage during the preliminary rounds. It was not even Matsumura who qualified for the final, but Kamigaki Kazunari (JPN).
