Georgian judoka Tato Grigalashvili took the bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in Zagreb in 2017. He won bronze at the Junior European Championships in 2017 and 2019. He took bronze at the Grand Prix in Antalya in 2018. Tato took a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi and Grand Slam in Baku in 2019. He took bronze at the Universiade in Napoli and gold at the Grand Prix in Budapest and bronze in Zagreb. He captured a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Marrakech.

One-time Grand Prix gold medallist Tato Grigalashvili of Georgia delivered a commanding victory for Georgia as the world number 18 toyed with the Olympic champion Khasan Khalmurzaev (RUS) on his way to -81kg gold. The 20-year-old was unfazed by the calibre of his opposition in the final as the gold backpatch of the Russian only served to highlight just how impressive Grigalashvili was despite being relatively raw at this level. Former world champion Nagase Takanori of Japan won his second Grand Prix title in July as he followed up on his Montreal win by going unbeaten in Zagreb. Olympic bronze medallist Nagase bested London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Antoine Valois-Fortier (CAN) by ippon in the final in a first-time meeting between two of the leading judoka in one of judo’s most fascinating weight categories. Georgia’s Tato Grigalashvili ruled the U81kg category at the Grand prix in Budapest as he swept aside world number 353 Joao Macedo (BRA) in the final. Judo Sogipa member Macedo, 27, the older brother of Rafael Macedo, world number 15 in the weight category above, was overwhelmed by 19-year-old Baku Grand Slam bronze medallist Grigalashvili who opened the scoring with an o-uchi-gari for a waza-ari and added a second from a trademark hip throw.
