Judo Israel celebrated the two Olympic bronze medals achieved by Yarden Gerbi and Or Sasson in Rio 2016. Yael Arad and Shay-Oren Smadja in 1992 and Ariel Zeevi in 2004 also won Olympic judo medals. Yarden Gerbi was the first and only judo World champion of Israel in 2013. Israel won 8 World Championships medals. Yael Arad won a European title in 1993, Ariel Zeevi won four judo titles for Israel. Sagi Muki was the last in 2018. In 2016 the European U23 Championships are held in Tel Aviv. Women’s headcoach Shani Hersko heads the women’s team, Shay-Oren Smadja is the men’s headcoach. Israel successfully organised the inaugural Grand Prix in Tel Aviv in 2019.
