Olympic Games #5 Marie Muller cancels Worlds in Astana
Luxembourg judoka Marie Muller will not be taking part in the world championships in Kazakhstan due to injury. Muller announced her decision to skip the event on social media. The Judo World Championships, hosted in Astana, Kazakhstan, are set to start on Monday.
The athlete cited a shoulder injury, which she has been dealing with for several week and which is more serious than previously thought. Muller had previously posted photos on Facebook of her preparation for the competition, which would have been a key step to earning a qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Muller: "I hope it won't take too long. Probably next week I know more. I assume it's something like SLAP."
A Slap tear or lesion in an injury to the gelnoid labrum. SLAP is an acronym for "superior labral tear from anterior to posterior".
Muller's participation in the Games next year now remains uncertain. Earlier this year, Muller had said in an interview with RTL that she intends to end her career as a professional athlete at the end of 2016. At the Olympic Games in London in 20120 Marie Muller finished with a surprising fifth place.
The Luxembourg team will still be represented at the Judo World Championships, with Manon Durbach, Lynn Mossong and Tom Schmit set to compete.
Also Majlinda Kelmendi cancelled her participation today in the same category U52kg.
