World Championship bronze medalist (2023, 2021) and former European Champion (2010) and eight IJF World Tour gold medals (5 GS titles) and two European bronze medals (2011, 2016) and participation in four Olympic Games, where he notably placed 5th in Rio in 2016.

That’s the impressive record of Swedish judoka Marcus Nyman (34), who began his international career competing as a cadet in 2005. Now, after nearly 20 years, Nyman has decided to retire from competition. On November 30th, Nyman stepped onto the tatami in Gmunden for the very last time, exactly 5,404 days—nearly 15 years—after his debut in Vienna.
He retired on saturday at the Final Four in Gmunden. Austria has played a key role throughout the Swede’s illustrious career. Nearly 15 years ago, Marcus Nyman made his debut on the IJF World Tour at the World Cup in Vienna. Just two months later, again in Vienna, he shocked the judo world by winning the European title with a final victory over Varlam Liparteliani (GEO). During the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the “Viking,” who works as an elevator technician outside of judo, competed as a foreign legionnaire for Judo Union Raika Pinzgau in Rauris. Since 2012, he has represented UJZ Mühlviertel.
Nyman has an interesting back ground. His mother Elizabeth Karlsson, is a 1986 World silver medalist. Also, despite being a full-time athlete, Nyman also holds a full-time day job in the construction industry. From 7am to 4pm he builds elevators. After work, he heads to the dojo for judo training.
Apparently, the national federation has offered many times to support him financially but Nyman prefers to work as an elevator mechanic. “He loves it, doesn’t want to do anything else and I think this gives him a good balance in life and that makes him successful,” his coach Robert Eriksson said in 2021. He has been doing this throughout his sporting career. It's not about money, it's about his lifestyle, what he wants to do and what gives him harmony in life.
