German Judo Federation confirms Spittka as new head coach
The German Judo Federation (DJB) have finally announced new appointments for its national coaching staff, naming Marko Spittka as the new head coach for the men's team and Juan Ignacio Cuneo as co-head coach for the U18 division alongside Christopher Schwarzer.
Marko Spittka brings extensive experience from his remarkable career as both an athlete and coach. As a former European Champion, World Championship silver medalist, and Olympic bronze medalist in Atlanta 1996, Spittka transitioned seamlessly into coaching after retiring from competition. Most notably, he guided Diyora Keldiyorova from Uzbekistan to Olympic gold at the Paris Games this past summer. Michael Bazynski, DJB High-Performance Director, expressed enthusiasm for Spittka’s return to Germany, highlighting his significant contributions to the federation in the past and his proven success abroad, particularly in Uzbekistan. During his tenure there, Spittka also coached athletes to two World Championship silver medals. Bazynski described him as highly motivated and full of energy, ready to bring his expertise back to the DJB.
In the U18 category, Juan Ignacio Cuneo steps into the role of co-head coach alongside Christopher Schwarzer. Originally from Argentina, Cuneo has lived in Leipzig for several years, where he completed his studies and worked with the Saxony Judo Federation. He has already collaborated with Schwarzer in the past, gaining valuable experience in the U18 program. Together, they will focus on strengthening the structure of the U18 division, aiming to enhance collaboration with regional training centers, organize regular joint training sessions, and provide broader support for young athletes. Bazynski emphasized the importance of improving performance quality in this age category and expressed confidence that the duo would bring about positive change.
In announcing these appointments, Bazynski expressed optimism for the future, stating that the DJB now has two highly motivated and experienced coaches who are well-equipped to lead German judo to new heights. With this strengthened leadership, the federation is poised to advance its efforts at both the senior and junior levels.
JudoInside announced the agreement with Spittka at 3 December although he hadn't yet signed the contract. Now the details are clear and DJB confirmed its new men's coach.
