Naohisa Takato and Joshiro Maruyama make comeback at Kodokan Cup
The upcoming Kodokan Cup in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, will feature two of Japan's top judokas, each looking not only for a title but also to secure a coveted selection for the Tokyo Grand Slam on December 7-8. This prestigious event promises to be a showcase of elite judo talent.
In the U60kg category, Olympic champion and four-time world champion Naohisa Takato will make his comeback. Takato’s return is significant, as his younger peer, Ryuju Nagayama, was chosen to represent Japan at the recent Paris Olympics. The Kodokan Cup offers Takato a chance to reestablish himself as the primary choice in the highly competitive U60kg class.
In the U66kg division, two-time world champion Joshiro Maruyama faces an intense field. Although he earned silver at the Paris Grand Slam in February, losing to Takeshi Takeoka, Maruyama remains in one of the most fiercely contested categories. This division includes double Olympic champion Hifumi Abe, 2024 world champion Ryoma Tanaka, junior world champion Shuntaro Fukuchi, and Kairi Kentoku from Tenri University.
With both judokas aiming for a spot at the Tokyo Grand Slam, the Kodokan Cup is set to deliver high-stakes bouts that will influence Japan’s national judo rankings and establish key contenders for future international events.
