The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, the second post-Paris World Judo Tour event of the new season and the first grand slam, is setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling start to the new Olympic cycle. Last year, the competition produced stars like Odette Giuffrida, who went on to claim a world title, and Alice Bellandi, who captured Olympic gold in Paris. This year, the tournament features a mix of seasoned athletes with world medals and fresh faces, eager to make their mark in the sport.

One of the most anticipated competitors is Joanne Van Lieshout of the Netherlands. Despite a disappointing result at the Paris Olympics, where she lost in her first fight as the number one seed, Van Lieshout is returning to a venue that holds special significance. In May, she claimed her first world title in Abu Dhabi in the -63 kg category. Still only 21, Van Lieshout remains one of the brightest young talents in judo, and she is back this weekend to defend her title and launch her campaign for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle.

In the -78 kg division, Germany’s Anna Monta Olek is expected to shine. During the Paris cycle, the 22-year-old faced stiff competition from her compatriots Wagner and Boehm for Olympic selection, limiting her chances on the World Judo Tour. Nevertheless, Olek has already secured six WJT medals in her young senior career. Now, she returns to Abu Dhabi with renewed determination, aiming to start her path toward LA 2028 in dominant fashion.

The -100 kg division is particularly stacked with talent, featuring double world medallist Michael Korrel of the Netherlands and reigning world champion Arman Adamian (IJF). Both judoka are in top form and will be battling for supremacy in one of the most competitive categories. In the +100 kg division, Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Tamerlan Bashaev (IJF) leads the field as the world number six. Known for his incredible power and skill, Bashaev will be looking to add another grand slam gold to his impressive resume.

As the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam kicks off, all eyes will be on these athletes as they push toward new goals in the LA28 cycle. With a blend of experienced champions and emerging stars, the competition promises to deliver high drama and set the tone for the seasons to come.
