Russian junior men capture 4 gold in Berlin!
Aren’t the Russian Juniors just amazing? At the European Cup for Juniors in Berlin, the men’s team won three consecutive titles: U90kg, U100kg and +100kg. Russia ended with four medals and finished first in the medal table of the tournament, the second best performance ever.
Only in 2011 did the Russian men win more medals, 6 in total, all by men. In the best editions for Russia, only men celebrated victories.

Heavyweight Tamerlan Bashaev was the only winner in Berlin to prolong his last year’s title, so there were 15 new champions. In the final he defeated Guram Tushishvili of Georgia.
On Saturday, Pavel Patokov took over the title of Egor Mgdsyan, who was World Junior Champion in Miami. In U90kg, it was Mikhail Igolnikov who succeeded Krisztian Toth, who is now the world ranking leader in the senior U90kg division. In the final he defeated a Georgian judoka: David Ramazashvili.
In U100kg, it was Oleg Abaev, who defeated Domenik Schoenefeldt of Germany.
Georgia did win a title, Levan Gugava won U81kg gold against Robert Uniewski (GER).
In the women’s category U63kg, Great Britain dominated this season thus far. Lubjana Piovesana won four European Cups so far, but today she was stopped by Lucy Renshall, her compatriot. Renshall follows Szabina Gercsak who became European champion and now fights at U70kg.
Marie Eve Gahie was the winner last year at U70kg, she won bronze at the World Junior Championships last year as well. This time the gold medal went to Michaela Polleres of Austria. Winning in Berlin gives a certain guarantee for future success. Austria cheered at the EYOF for the gold by Stephan Hegyi and now conclude a good weekend.
Julie Hoelterhoff won the only German gold medal for the host, who defeated Jasmijn Lesterhuis of the Netherlands. For Hoelterhoff, it was her second victory after Leibnitz and bronze in Wroclaw.
Brazil was happy with the fourth European Cup victory this season for Camila Nogueira. The Brazilian mingled in a select group of talents who won four European Cups in 2015. Piovesana led the ranking, and still as she won silver in Berlin, and has a total of 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze this season. Amber Gersjes (NED) added her fourth on Saturday and Mikhail Igolnikov seems again superior in his new weight class 90kg.
