Christophe Massina's career with the French Judo Federation is a remarkable story of dedication, perseverance, and triumph. Having devoted 20 years to the sport, Massina's journey as a coach is as decorated as it is inspiring. Starting in 2004, he took charge of the French U23 women's team, laying the foundation for a career that would see him rise to the highest echelons of judo coaching.

Massina first made his mark on the Olympic stage as part of the coaching team at Athens 2004. However, it was after the London 2012 Olympics that his role began to evolve significantly. After working with the women's elite team for four years, he transitioned to coaching the elite men's team post-Rio 2016. His leadership and strategic insight were instrumental in shaping the French judo teams that competed on the global stage.

In March 2022, Massina was appointed as the head coach of the elite women's team, a role that culminated in yet another stellar achievement at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Under his guidance, the French national team secured their second consecutive Olympic gold in the mixed team event, defeating the formidable Japanese team. Reflecting on this victory, Massina expressed his profound satisfaction and the emotional intensity of the moment, stating, "We have finished with a team gold and so many great emotions. This is a great medal to win again against the Japanese team."

Massina's coaching career is punctuated by his role in some of the most memorable moments in French judo history. He was the coach behind Emilie Andéol's Olympic gold at Rio 2016 and was a key figure in the national team’s triumph in the mixed team event at Tokyo 2020. The victory at Paris 2024, however, seems to be a fitting capstone to his illustrious career.

Despite a promising junior career as an athlete, Massina never achieved the same level of success in senior individual competitions. Nonetheless, his contributions as a member of the French men's judo team, which won European and World Championship medals in team events, paved the way for his transition into coaching. His career as a coach is a testament to his ability to inspire and lead, qualities that have brought numerous victories to the French judo teams over the years.

Massina’s strategic acumen and motivational prowess were on full display during the Paris 2024 mixed team final. He had spent the three-year Olympic cycle preparing for this moment, rallying his team with the belief that they could once again triumph over their rivals. In a dramatic turn of events, Joan Gaba's victory over Hifumi Abe and Clarisse Agbegnenou’s crucial win brought the team level, setting the stage for their ultimate victory. Massina’s foresight in identifying Agbegnenou as the “finish girl” who would deliver in the clutch was a masterstroke, echoing her decisive performance in Tokyo.

As Massina steps away from his role with the French national team, he does so with a sense of fulfillment and completeness. "I stop my career with this! I’m happy to move on, I’m complete thanks to them and this," he remarked, signaling the end of an era. Though his next steps remain unknown, Massina leaves behind a legacy of excellence and a treasure trove of memories for the world of judo. His contributions to the sport have been invaluable, and his impact will be felt for years to come.
