Small Kosovo again with two women on the podium
Judo in Kosovo has gained significant recognition, particularly due to the outstanding achievements of its athletes on the international stage. The country’s success in judo is a source of national pride and has helped to elevate the sport’s profile within Kosovo. Their living legend, Olympic Champion Majlinda Kelmendi, was on site in Paris, but for the first time at a Summer Games, she was sitting on the sidelines in a new role as a coach.
Kelmendi shared her thoughts on this transition: "It was not easy at all, but I enjoyed it a lot. I actually felt like I was going to fight, I had a lot of stress but I managed it well, I think. When Laura won, I had the same feelings as when I won the Olympic medal for myself. Laura could do more but she had too much pressure, and still, it's okay, she won a medal."
Reflecting on the team's performance, Kelmendi expressed a mix of emotions. "Where do I start… With the sad part, as Loriana finished her career. She came from Switzerland to Kosovo 8 years ago and won European and world medals for us, becoming one of the best athletes in the history of Kosovo. She participated in the Olympics twice. Overall, I am very happy with everyone’s performance. Both Nora and Lori were injured three months before the Games, so it was hard for them to prepare well. Akil was just amazing and it is a pity that he did not win a medal."
She continued, "Distria was so confident, as always, and with that, I would like to thank the big boss, Toni, for trusting me and letting me sit in the chair to coach the athletes. I feel blessed. Thanks to him, Kosovo now has five Olympic medals and all of them are from judo. We are full of joy and gratitude."
Judo in Kosovo is a thriving sport that has brought the country international acclaim. The achievements of its judoka are a testament to their hard work, talent, and the effective support system in place, making judo a significant part of Kosovo’s sports culture and identity.
