Flagbearers in judo: Peter Paltchik (ISR)

Peter Paltchik, a prominent Israeli judoka, has faced significant personal challenges in the lead-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Born on January 4, 1992, he resides in Beer Yaakov, Israel, where he has become a symbol of strength and resilience. Paltchik is a father of two and has been deeply affected by the ongoing conflict in his country. His coach, Oren Smadja, tragically lost his son in the war, and Paltchik has stood by his side, offering support during these difficult times.

Despite these hardships, Paltchik's determination remains unwavering. As the flagbearer for Israel, he carries not only the weight of his personal experiences but also the hopes of his nation. He made his Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, finishing seventh in the -100kg category and earning a bronze medal in the team event with Israel. His notable achievements include a gold medal at the 2020 European Championships and a bronze at the 2023 World Championships.

Paltchik's journey in judo began at a young age, influenced by his grandfather, who encouraged him to take up the sport to address his joint problems and channel his abundant energy. Over the years, he has trained diligently at the Wingate Institute under the guidance of national coach Oren Smadja. His preferred technique, Osoto-Otoshi, has brought him success in numerous international competitions, including multiple Grand Slam and Grand Prix victories.

Balancing his athletic career with commercial opportunities has been a challenge, but Paltchik is committed to maintaining focus on his judo while preparing for Paris. He cherishes his family time, often enjoying the beach or nature with his loved ones, and remains inspired by his grandfather, who instilled in him the values of toughness and dedication. With a philosophy of "Faith goes beyond logic," Paltchik aims not only to excel at the Olympics but also to build a supportive community for Olympic athletes in Israel, providing them with more opportunities and resources.
