Hugo Cumbo, representing the small Pacific nation of Vanuatu, is set to capture the world’s attention as he competes in his second Olympic Games and carries his country's flag at the opening ceremony in Paris. The journey of this talented judoka and engineer is a story of determination, intelligence, and a deep love for his homeland.

Born in 1996, in Noumea, Vanuatu, Hugo Cumbo was introduced to judo at the tender age of four by his father, Georges Cumbo, who was instrumental in reviving the Port-Vila Judo Club. Judo quickly became a family tradition, and Hugo’s early exposure to the sport laid the foundation for his future successes.

His first significant international experience came in 2012 at the Oceanian Championships in Cairns. This exposure ignited his competitive spirit and desire to represent Vanuatu on the global stage. Hugo’s dedication to judo led him to train at the ASPTT Judo Club in Noumea, New Caledonia, and under the personal coaching of Trindade Abreu de Abedias since 2022.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Hugo is an accomplished academic. He graduated in 2019 with a Master’s degree in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts et Metiers (ENSAM). His engineering background complements his analytical approach to judo, demonstrating his ability to balance rigorous academic and athletic disciplines.

Hugo made his Olympic debut in the -81 kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Games, finishing 17th after a challenging match against Sharofiddin Boltaboev from Uzbekistan. Despite this early exit, his participation marked a significant milestone for Vanuatu in the sport of judo.

On the World Tour, Hugo’s persistence and skill have been evident, even though he faced tough competition. His performance in Tokyo in 2022, where he ranked 33rd, showcases his ongoing commitment to improving and competing at the highest levels.

Hugo’s ambitions extend beyond personal success. He aims to contribute to the development of high-level judo in Vanuatu by sharing his experiences and facilitating opportunities for young judokas to train in New Caledonia. He believes that with the right resources and determination, the next generation of Vanuatu athletes can reach the highest levels of international competition.

Fluent in Bislama, English, French, and Spanish, Hugo’s linguistic skills reflect his broad intellectual interests and cultural adaptability. Outside of judo, he enjoys mountain walks, sea outings, underwater fishing, and engaging in various team sports such as handball, rugby, football, and rowing.

Hugo’s sporting philosophy is rooted in resilience and perseverance. His mottos, “The end justifies the means” and “Come on, one more,” reflect his commitment to pushing through challenges to achieve his goals. Influential figures in his career include his father Georges, judoka Florence Daoleuang, and Eric Reuillard, who have all played pivotal roles in shaping his judo journey.

For Hugo Cumbo, there is no greater honor than representing Vanuatu at the Olympic Games. His participation not only showcases his personal achievements but also brings pride to his family, his community, and his country. As he prepares to compete in Paris, Hugo embodies the spirit of Vanuatu, demonstrating that even athletes from small nations can participate and perhaps book godo progress at this blockbuster event.
