As the judo world gears up for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, one athlete stands out not only for his skill but for his remarkable journey and age. Will Tai Tin, born in 1985, in Invercargill, New Zealand, is set to become the oldest participant in the judo tournament, and the oldest male judoka of this century to compete in any Olympic Games. At 39, Tai Tin's story is one of late blooming, dedication, and an unyielding passion for the sport he only started in his thirties.

Raised in Samoa and currently residing in Melbourne, Australia, Tai Tin embarked on his judo journey relatively late in life. He was born and raised in New Zealand and Australia but always kept a bond with the motherland. He began training in 2016 at Taketani Judo Academy under Sensei Naohiro Taketani. What started as a pursuit for health and a way to be active for his children, who were already involved in judo, soon became a serious commitment. A transformative trip to Japan in late 2016 catalyzed his dedication, prompting him to throw himself fully into competitive judo upon his return.

Will Tai Tin trains primarily at Senshi Academy in Melbourne under the guidance of coach Ivo Dos Santos, who will also accompany him as the head coach for Samoa at the Paris Olympics. His training regimen includes rigorous strength and conditioning sessions at Grit Athletic Performance with coaches Robbie Tissera and Tyson Deane. Despite starting judo later in life, Tai Tin quickly made a name for himself on the international stage. He competed at the World Championships in 2019 and 2021 and participated in numerous World Judo Tour events. His best performance came at the 2022 Oceania Open in Tahiti, where he finished fifth in the -73 kg category.

Family plays a significant role in Will's life. He is a father to two children, Ethan and Lily, both of whom compete in judo at the cadet and junior levels. Sharing the podium with his children at the Australian National Championships is one of his most cherished memories. Tai Tin's journey is not just about personal achievement but also about inspiring and developing the sport of judo within Pacific nations. He is passionate about using judo as a vehicle for positive change, improving the well-being and quality of life in his community.

Outside of judo, Tai Tin enjoys nature, hiking, reading, travelling, and rugby—both watching and playing. His hero is Richie McCaw, the legendary New Zealand rugby union player, whose discipline and success inspire Will's approach to judo. His sporting philosophy, “You miss 100% of the shots you don't take,” and his motto, “Leave it all on the mat,” reflects his determination and commitment to making the most of every opportunity.

As he prepares for Paris 2024, Tai Tin is poised to make history and serve as an inspiration to athletes worldwide. His journey from a late start in judo to becoming the oldest judoka at the Olympics underscores the power of dedication, resilience, and the belief that it’s never too late to pursue one's dreams.
