The U73kg category at the Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam 2024 showcased an array of spectacular judo, culminating in a final between the top-seeded Manuel Lombardo of Italy and the third-seeded Danil Lavrentyev of the Individual Athletes of Neutral (AIN) team. However, focusing solely on their performances would overlook other noteworthy displays.

Lombardo seized the initiative early in the final, surprising Lavrentyev with a swift sode-tsurikomi-goshi just six seconds into the match, earning a waza-ari. A captivating exchange ensued on the ground, lasting a full minute, during which Lavrentyev attempted to secure an ude-garami submission. Lombardo demonstrated exceptional defensive skills, thwarting Lavrentyev's attempts. With his lead secured, Lombardo adopted a defensive approach, ultimately clinching his fourth grand slam gold medal.

While both athletes demonstrated podium-worthy performances, the first bronze medal match featured Tommy Green and Bakhitzhan Abdurakhmanov. Green showcased dominance in the initial stages, applying pressure and nearly scoring several times near the edge of the contest area. However, Abdurakhmanov staged a comeback, countering Green's kata-guruma attempt with a hikikomi-gaeshi throw, securing a waza-ari and his first grand slam medal. Green's performance marked a significant achievement for Irish judo, achieving the best result in a grand slam in five years.

In the second bronze medal contest, Makhmadbek Makhmadbekov faced Galandarzade in a closely contested match. Despite their even matchup, two penalties within 20 seconds for Galandarzade placed him under pressure. Makhmadbekov capitalized on a weak attack from his opponent 30 seconds into golden score, executing a decisive counter to score a waza-ari and claim his seventh grand slam medal. However, despite his commendable performance, Makhmadbekov may lament losing ground to Lavrentyev in the Olympic rankings.
