Czech surprise Renata Zachova pursuits a stunt at the Olympics

Czech judoka Renata Zachova made history by becoming the surprise European champion in the u63kg category. Despite being ranked just 22nd in the world, Zachova emerged victorious, defeating Joanne Van Lieshout of the Netherlands in the final. Van Lieshout initially took the lead with a waza-ari, but Zachova responded with a sode-tsurikomi-goshi, scoring an ippon and securing the European title.

Zachova's journey to the final included victories over Alessia Corrao, Magdalena Krssakova, Savita Russo, and defending champion Andreja Leski. Her coach's advice to showcase her usual judo proved successful, leading to her historic achievement as the first female European champion from Czechia.

In the bronze medal matches, Croatian Katarina Kristo faced off against Savita Russo of Italy in a thrilling contest that went into golden score. Despite several attempts to secure victory, Russo ultimately capitalized on an opportunity and threw Kristo with an uchi mata for the win. Meanwhile, 2023 champion Andreja Leski of Slovenia battled against Lubjana Piovesana of Austria in another intense golden score bout, with Leski ultimately prevailing with a driving drop seoi nage.

Renata Zachova, a name synonymous with resilience and determination, is making waves in the world of judo. Born in České Budějovice, Renata's journey in judo began in 2007 at the tender age of seven, close to her home at SK České Budějovice. Since then, she has emerged as one of the most promising talents in the sport.

Her breakthrough came in 2020 when she clinched the Junior European title in Porec, Croatia, showcasing her exceptional talent and skill on the mat. Renata's success continued to soar as she secured silver at the 2018 European Championships U23 in Gyor, Hungary, and achieved numerous fifth-place finishes at major championships.

Renata's remarkable achievements extend beyond the European circuit. She has made her mark on the World Judo Tour, earning three bronze medals at prestigious events such as the Grand Prix Tel Aviv, Grand Prix Zagreb, and Grand Prix of Portugal. Her stellar performances have cemented her status as the most successful Czech judoka in the World Judo Tour since its inception in 2009.
