As the world eagerly awaits the 2024 Olympic Games, athletes from all walks of life are preparing to showcase their talents and determination on the grandest stage of them all. Among these athletes stands germany's Martin Setz.

Setz’ journey in judo began in 2006 in Bernau, Germany, where he took his first steps onto the tatami. Inspired by his love for combat sports and the philosophy of judo, Martin quickly fell in love with the sport, embracing its multifaceted nature and the challenges it presented.

Over the years, Martin's dedication to judo has been unwavering. Through countless hours of training and perseverance, he has honed his skills and risen through the ranks of the sport. Under the guidance of his coaches, including Mario Schendel at UJKC Potsdam and national coach Pedro Guedes, Martin has continued to push his limits and strive for excellence.

One of his most memorable moments came in 2010 when he became the German national champion for the first time. This achievement was followed by his first international medal in 2014, a testament to his growing prowess on the international stage.

Despite facing setbacks, including knee injuries in 2016 and 2018, Martin remained undeterred, bouncing back stronger each time. In 2022, he secured his first international medal after overcoming injury and a change in weight class, showcasing his resilience and determination.

Olympic Aspirations

As Setz sets his sights on the 2024 Olympic Games, his ambitions remain as high as ever. With a burning desire to represent his country on the world stage, he continues to push himself to new heights with bronze at the Oceania Open in Perth last year and a promising seventh place at the Grand Prix Upper Austria in Linz. Ranked 28th U66kg he will need some points to qualify for the Games. His fifth place at the Tokyo Grand Slam in 2022 was typical how close he could reach the medal stage fighting for bronze.

Outside of judo, Martin finds solace in exploring other sports, reading, and indulging in his passion for espresso. These moments of respite provide him with the balance and perspective needed to excel in his athletic pursuits.

Setz draws inspiration from his first coach, Hartmut Ott, whose guidance and mentorship have played a pivotal role in shaping his judo journey. His sporting philosophy revolves around the belief in always getting back up one more time than you fall and letting actions speak louder than words.

A Legacy in the Making:

As Martin continues to chase his Olympic dreams, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, dedication, and unwavering determination. Through his journey, he inspires others to pursue their passions relentlessly and never waver in the face of adversity.

With his eyes set on the ultimate event, the man from Potsdam continues to push himself to some more points to be ranked among the 23 best in his category U66kg.
