National hero Lasha Shavdatuashvili confirms for home crowd
The standout performer at the Grand Slam in Tbilisi was none other than the national hero, world, and Olympic champion Lasha Shavdatuashvili (GEO). With the level displayed by Galstian and Shavdatuashvili, anticipation was high for a top-tier final.
Indeed, the final was of exceptional quality, particularly from the local legend and hero Lasha Shavdatuashvili. Despite recent struggles in previous tournaments, he showcased outstanding form during the final. Executing a remarkable throw with an o-uchi-gari entry followed by a sudden change of direction into a yoko-gake, Shavdatuashvili delivered one of the most spectacular moments of the tournament, orbiting Galstian to secure victory.
A major attraction of the event was Japanese competitor Soichi Hashimoto, whose impressive record includes numerous world and Masters medals as well as grand slam and grand prix successes. Although Hashimoto aimed for a possible bronze medal, he faced a tough challenge against Mark Hristov (BUL). With seconds remaining and both judoka holding two shidos each, Hashimoto secured victory with a last-minute tsuri-komi-goshi. Despite a challenging day, Hashimoto, who will represent Japan at the upcoming Olympic Games, gained valuable experience against European opponents, crucial for his preparations for Paris.
In the second bronze medal contest, Alexander Bernd Gabler (GER) and Tohar Butbul (ISR) battled fiercely. Ultimately, Butbul emerged victorious, scoring twice to claim the bronze medal.
