Germany takes five cadet titles at European Cup Berlin
Last weekend the top cadets of Europe were able to attend at the European Cup in Berlin. The capital returned with this major event for Cadets. The host nation received five gold medals itself as well as three silver and eight bronze medals. Germany ended at the top of the nation podium followed by the team of Poland that captured three titles in Berlin. The German Judo Federation hosted 386 youngsters from 25 countries.
The talented team of Switzerland finished the two days with two titles, six countries captured one gold medal.
There was a fireworks display of top performances on the first day. Sophie Grace Storm (-48 kg), Tabea Nika Mecklenburg (-52 kg) and 15-year old Julius Glaser (-55 kg) win gold medals. Mecklenburg (17) collected her second victory of the season. The special thing about it is that in the class up to 52 kg, Tabea Mecklenburg won against Klara Erten in an all-German final, who took home silver. In addition, Phillip Pesterew also took silver in the class U66kg. There were also four bronze medals.
The second day was also be equally successful. Paul Friedrichs (-73 kg) and Sveyarike Konrad (-63 kg) won their competition and took gold. Georgy Yakhnin (-81 kg) took silver after his final against Canada’s Kryvytskyi. There were four bronze medals again on the second day. Polish World medallist in Zagreb Zuzanna Banaszewska from Poland won her category +70kg.
The five gold medals bring Germany in the top 10 of best performing countries this season in the IJF World Tour where France leads with 19 titles, Azerbaijan follows with 18 and Brazil is strong in Pan America with 17 titles, but 16 in Bahia at home. Also Australia looks strong but with 13 out of 16 titles in Canberra the Italians have won nine titles abroad this season including 15 year old Giulia Sorelli in Berlin U57kg.
