Florin Bologa confirms world class at Para Championships
Florin Bologa from Romania has won the first gold medal at the European Para Championships in Rotterdam. The Romanian triumphed on Tuesday in the first final of para-judo and did so in the category J1 U73kg. Bologa defeated Lennart Sass of Germany in the first final of the day and about medaled the European Para Championships: a multi-sport tournament that died for the first time in history.
“This is a great feeling,” said Bologa after the final. “The atmosphere at this tournament is great. The organization is great and it is very important for us to have such a tournament. Every Paralympic athlete and para-judoka deserves a multi-sport tournament like this.”
Bologa, who won Paralympic bronze in 2016 and 2020, said the win undoubtedly puts him on track for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. “Of course this gives confidence,” he laughed. “Paris 2024 is ultimately my main goal. I will win a medal there. Preferably gold, of course, but a medal would be great.”
The first edition of the European Para Championships kicked off on Monday evening with a spectacular opening ceremony, with the first games scheduled for Tuesday. In total, seven gold medals were doubled in parajudo on Tuesday.
