The comeback of Fabio Basile at the Grand Slam in Tel Aviv was somewhat unlucky. In this first contest he lost to one of the top favourites for the title U66kg, Georgia’s Vazha Margvelashvili, a specialist in this category and the later winner in Tel Aviv. The fight in the first round means no repechage for the Italian Olympic Champion of 2016. Both top fighters had never met before.

In 2016 the young Italian won the Olympic Games at U66kg. He had flair and fun in his judo and he quickly became a superstar. In Abu Dhabi in October 2017 Fabio Basile appeared at U73kg for the first time, 15 months after the Games. He has stayed in that heavier category ever since, earning a handful of medals but nothing on the scale of his Olympic victory. In Tel Aviv he made a return to the U66kg category and of course was unseeded which didn’t protect him against seeded Margvelashvili. The Georgian was eager to take revanche in his failed Masters in Jerusalem in December where he lost in the first round. This time he walked away with the gold medal.
