Funa Tonaki (JPN) was on top form at the Hungary Grand Slam where she won all her matches by ippon. In her first match, Tonaki showed how capable she was on the ground, engaging in an extended newaza exchange where she actually pinned her opponent, Liu Ting (CHN) twice for waza-ari-awasete-ippon.

Against Katharina Menz (GER), Tonaki used a tewaza counter to take down her opponent and then held her for the ippon win.

It was in her third match, that Tonaki showed she had good throwing skills too. First, she threw her opponent, Mirela Lapuerta Comas (ESP) with a waist-grab ouchi (similar to the kind Naohisa Takato does) and then she used kouchi-gake for the second score.

It's very rare that a Japanese female player would fail to disentangle her leg from this kind of situation.

In the final, Tonaki relied on groundwork again, pinning Julia Figueroa (ESP) after disentangling her leg in a hold-down situation. Once she secured the pin, there was no way the Spanish player was going to escape.
