Amy Cotton of Antigonish, Nova Scotia won a bronze medal today in the Under-78 kg tournament at the Judo World Cup event in Sofia, Bulgaria. This result qualified Cotton for the 2005 Judo World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, in September.

“I made a deal with Isabel (Latulippe) before this meet that we would not let the other down and we both won a medal,” said Cotton. Latulippe also won a bronze medal on Saturday and qualified for the Worlds. “I still have many aspects to work on but I’m happy with this third place. I had three good bouts on four and the loss came due to a lack of concentration.”

In her first bout, Cotton defeated an opponent from Belgium before dropping her second bout to a Dutch athlete.

Cotton took only a minute to overtake her Greek opponent in her first bout in the round of repechage.

In the bronze medal final, Cotton defeated a Russian athlete. “I’m very happy with this bout. My work down low was perfect and I won by immobilizing my opponent. I missed my attempt to qualify for the Worlds in December but this time I prepared hard in training and I’m doing better,” concluded Cotton who will spend the next two months in Europe to improve on her technique.
