Injury fear for judo queen Ryoko Tani
The Japanese judo team's preparations for the Athens Olympics have been hit by an injury to defending bantamweight champion Ryoko Tani. Tani, who won the world title for the sixth time in a row last year, damaged muscles and tendons on her left fibula during a training session.
"We have no idea at the moment when she would be able to resume training," said Japan women's coach Kazuro Yoshimura.
"It seems painful for her to walk. I'm worried because it is her pivot foot." Tani, who used to fight under her maiden name Tamura, is one of judo's biggest stars. Last year she married Japanese professional baseball player Yoshitomo Tani, who will also play for Japan in Athens.
The tournament for her division will take place on 14 August, giving her little time to recover.
The injury is a major concern as Tani uses her left foot to support herself and her opponent's weight when she executes throws.
