Ariel Zeevi strikes judo gold at European Championships
Arik Zeeevi on Sunday successfully defended his under 100-kilo title with a victory in the final at the European Judo Championships in Bucharest. Zeevi defeated his Hungarian challenger, Antel Hungarian, by Ipon, giving the Israeli his third championship in the weight class, which he also won in 2001 and 2003.
In the semi-final, Zeevi defeated Zisan Lemierre by points. In 2001, Zeevi also defeated the Frenchman, to win the under-100 kilo title at the European Championships, which were held in Paris.
On Saturday, Israeli Yoel Rozbozov took the silver medal in the under-73 kg category. Rozbozov won four bouts with an Ipon before losing by Ipon to Spain's Kioshi Uematsu 3:48 minutes into the final.
With the the performances of Zeevi and Rozbozov, the tournament has been a disappointment for the rest of the Israeli delegation, with first-round losses, but Michal Feinblat and Gal Yekutiel will join Arik Zeevi, Udi Wax and Rozbozov at the Athens Games.
