Yuri Alvear's new challenge as a mother and a coach

Colombia is already working on the generational change in sports, with a view to the Olympic Games of the future. Judo, which this year in Tokyo 2020 had the only representation of Luz Adiela Álvarez in the 48kg category, fights strongly to leave a champion generation. With Yuri Alvear as a coach, but first she will become a mother.

For this reason, since last August 16, more than 400 children appeared in Bogotá to seek a place among the 37 best judoka in camps such as in Cali. Triple World Champion Yuri Alvear works with the children.

Alvear: “I am very happy for the opportunity, it is a great project. The basis must be the foundation, the formation of young people. I am motivated because they will be our next Olympic and world medals. I love taking all my knowledge to them and learning from them, ”said Yuri Alvear.

There are more than 18 camps throughout the country, but the most important are cycling and judo, which are more widely viewed and welcomed by the new generations, which represent the replacement for these sports disciplines.

Yuri Alvear, who was in charge of the technical foundation class, in which he corrected each of the movements of the little athletes. “We work a lot on the grip in judo to strengthen it, as well as the chaining and more real positions so that they internalize and form them. It is not training, it is that they already know how they should look in a real combat ”, added the woman who for the sixth time in history won two Olympic medals for Colombia.

Danna Vera arrived from Norte de Santander with the mentality of arriving in Paris 2024 with the delegation of our country: “When I qualified I was very happy. There were many children who showed up and few classified. Here I take couples, I learn more. As soon as I saw Yuri I was very happy, he teaches very well, I want to learn from the best and I came to give everything, ”said the 13-year-old girl who participates in the U-15 category.

In addition to Yuri Alvear, the children have the experience of Johana Orozco, a former judoka and the first Colombian woman to practice this discipline in the Olympic Games, specifically in Athens 2004. In this project, she is one of the guest coaches.

Alvear's judo career

Yuri Alvear is amazing judoka from Colombia, the best ever in her country. She is triple world champion in 2011, 2013 and 2014 and won bronze in 2015, 2017 and 2018. She won Olympic silver in 2016 in Rio and an Olympic bronze medal in 2012 in London and was 7th in Beijing. She won many Pan American Championships and took gold at the Grand Slam in Baku in 2017. Silver at the 2018 IJF World Masters in Guangzhou. Yuri won the Grand Slam in Brasilia in 2019. She retired in 2021 to become a coach and a mother.

Not only Alvear, who came out in the U70kg category, is pregnant, also Kim Polling and Mia Hermansson (fought U63kg) are pregnant.
