Draw completed for European Cup in Coimbra
Coimbra is the second European Cup for Juniors this season after last week’s edition in Sarajevo. The Tournament in Portugal has a long tradition that started in the beginning of this century in Lisbon and was hosted in Coimbra since 2000. In 2010 the European Cup Tour was installed and Coimbra was obviously part of the tour since then. Only in 2020 the Tour was interrupted due to the corona pandemic.
The European Cup in Coimbra had over 400 participants over the last years and this year approx. 300 athletes are expected.
The biggest teams this year are from host Portugal and neighbor Spain. Italy, Russia, Austria and France also confirmed a big delegation.
Many later world level Champions took part in Coimbra such as Olympic champions Giulia Quintvalle and Rafaela Silva and Olympic medallists such as Telma Monteiro, Automne Pavia and Charline van Snick won the event in Portugal. Double World Champion Nikoloz Sherazadishvili won the tournament in 2015 and 2016 in his current weight U90kg. Also current World Champions as Jessica Klimkait (2016) and Barbara Matic (2011) won gold in Coimbra. Current European Champion Sanne van Dijke is single record holder with three victories. 20 athletes won twice.
Spain (48), Netherlands (39), Brazil (34) and Portugal (26) won the most titles in the rich history of the tournament.
A part of the team of the Netherlands was taken out of the Junior European Cup in Coimbra after a teammember was found positive.
