Canadian Judo queen Christa Deguchi agrees with postponement
World Champion and Paris winner Christa Deguchi is facing the coronacrisis from her home in Japan. The Canadian judoka had a good pre-season but was interrupted by the crisis.
Deguchi reacts: “Prior to the IOC/JOC announcement and the state of emergency in Japan, I was confident in my ability to be ready for Tokyo 2020. When the Canadian team withdrew from the 2020 games, and then I heard the announcement that the games were postponed, of course I was disappointed.”
“It was a bit disappointing at first. However, it’s just a postponement for now (not a cancellation) so it’s not too bad. It gives me an extra year for training and preparation.”
“But the pandemic is a global health problem. Looking at the bigger picture, these are dangerous times for many people and it was the right decision to postpone. We need to take care of ourselves, our loved ones and others right now. That is most important.”
“With the games scheduled for 2021, I believe it gives me the necessary time to prepare and be ready again.”
