Junior world champion Gela Zaalishvili steps up to glory

Junior World Championships gold medallist Gela Zaalishvili of Georgia made an impression on the IJF World Judo Tour to open his senior medal account on the international stage. Zaalishvili countered a sasae-tsurikomi-ashi attempt from Tunis Grand Prix bronze medallist Ruslan Shakhbazov (RUS) with te-waza for a waza-ari score and added a second waza-ari to seal a decisive victory in the last contest of the Grand Slam in Azerbaijan.
In the first semi-final Zaalishvili downed Tel Aviv Grand Prix bronze medallist Anton Krivobokov (RUS) by ippon while In the second semi-final Shakhbazov profited from a below-par performance from Tbilisi Grand Prix silver medallist Aliaksandr Vakhaviak (BLR) who was disqualified after receiving three penalties.
The first bronze medal was won by Antalya Grand Prix bronze medallist Vladut Simionescu (ROU) who launched Vakhaviak with a uchi-mata for a waza-ari score and held down the Belarus judoka for 10 seconds and a place on the medal podium.
The second bronze medal went to Krivobokov floored former world bronze medallist Yakiv Khammo (UKR) for a waza-ari and calmly held down the highly-rated Ukrainian for his second and match-winning score.

New dynamics spice up heavyweight category

Beka Gviniashvili qualifies for World Championships, Tchrikishvili second
At the European Cup in Bratislava the ideal final developed throughout the day opposing the two judo icons Beka Gviniashvili and Avtandili Tchrikishvili U90kg. It was Gviniashvili making a waza-ari difference taking the second spot in the Georgian team U90kg. Ushangi Margiani already qualified for Baku. Read more

Teddy Riner undefeated to gold in Zagreb
As expected, French Teddy Riner won the gold of the men’s heavyweight category at the Grand Prix in Zagreb. Even if it was not his best day, in terms of physical condition and technique, he went through the preliminary rounds without any trouble and won two of his fights with penalties and the third with a superb ippon. Li Kochman simply the best U90kg at European Open Belgrade
France was the best nation at the European Cup in Belgrade in the men’s competition on Sunday with two gold medals. There was silver and bronze for the Serbian men and in total Serbia captured six medals at the first European Open. This year the level of the tournament was raised from European Cup to European Open. Israel won the medal tally with the last gold medal of Li Kochman. Read more
