Countdown for inaugural Judo Grand Prix Tel Aviv

The IJF World Judo Tour 2019 will launch in just over a week with a brand new event. The new season will open in Israel with the inaugural Tel Aviv Grand Prix from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 January.

Over 400 judoka from 53 countries will compete at the Shlomo Arena which is expected to be sold out on all three days.

Home star and European champion Sagi Muki will be one of the best supported judoka in Israel’s capital and will be an early favourite for gold.

Among the top athletes will be Tal Flicker, Baruch Shmailov U66kg, Peter Paltchik fighting for gold U100kg and back in the scene Or Sasson +100kg.

In the women’s division strong contenders with Rishony and Minsker U48kg, Primo and Temelkova U52kg. Nelson Levy U57kg and many more talents from the country where judo is the number one individual sport.

Israel’s Sagi Muki bested former world champion Nagase Takanori of Japan in the U81kg final in Ekaterinburg to win his third Grand Slam gold medal. Paris Grand Slam silver medallist Muki waited until the closing seconds before launching with seven seconds left with a shoulder throw for a waza-ari and world number 153 Nagase had to settle for silver in his first outing for 2019. Dominic Ressel books historic German victory

Germany's Dominic Ressel won Grand Slam gold for the first time as he defeated Tel Aviv Grand Prix winner Sagi Muki (ISR) by ippon for U81kg gold. Ressel countered his in-form rival for ippon and the best result of his career. It was for the first time since Ole Bischof captured gold in Paris in 2012 that Germany celebrated a gold medal. Sagi Muki secures hero status with sensational gold

European champion Sagi Muki of Israel produced the throw of the tournament so far as he catapulted the unsuspecting Ivaylo Ivanov (BUL) through the air with a textbook sode-tsurikomi-goshi in the U81kg final in Tel Aviv. Italy temporarily claimed top spot in the medal table after hitting the medal trail on day two but man of the moment Muki provided the crowd with a magical finish to win his country’s third gold medal at their home Grand Prix. Sagi Muki delivers for Israel at maiden Grand Prix

The full crowd cheered when Sagi Muki took the third gold medal for Israel at this first Grand Prix in Tel Aviv and first ever World Tour event in Israel. The crowd cheered all day but the Shlomo Group Arena exploded when Muki threw Ivaylo Ivanov in the final U81kg in the last contest of the day. Read more
