Junior World Championships silver medallist Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (CAN) was the star performer in the -57kg category in Ulaanbaatar's Grand Prix as she defeated former All Japan Judo Championships silver medallist Otomo Makiko (JPN). Rijeka Grand Prix bronze medallist Beauchemin-Pinard, 20, registered a yuko and contained Otomo with a determined effort before the Japanese judoka received a shido for stepping out of the area.
In the first semi-final OTOMO bested former Qingdao Grand Prix winner KIM Jan-Di (KOR) who took silver last year in Ulaanbaatar. KIM was penalised for a false attack and both judoka were then reprimanded for passivity. Both judoka failed to trouble the scoreboard so OTOMO prevailed on shido penalties. In the second semi-final BEAUCHEMIN-PINARD defeated Budapest Grand Prix bronze medallist Hedvig KARAKAS (HUN) on shido penalties with two against the Hungarian and one against the young Canadian.
The first bronze medal was won by four-time world medallist Telma MONTEIRO (POR) who outworked KARAKAS to go ahead with a waza-ari and add a yuko from a morote seoi-nage. Seasoned campaigner MONTEIRO was not going to let her Hungarian opponent back in the contest and played the clock as she received three shido penalties for passivity and two false attacks to see out the four minutes. The second bronze medal was won by 21-year-old Tina ZELTNER (AUT) who produced an impressive result against KIM. ZELTNER acquitted herself well and signalled a return to the IJF medal podium for the first time since she won bronze the 2013 Baku Grand Slam by pressuring KIM into receiving two shido penalties for not taking a grip while the Austrian infringed once for the same offence.
