Legendary judo great Yasuhiro Yamashita, the gold medalist in the open category at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, will become the next president of the All Japan Judo Federation (AJJF), a source revealed Friday.

Yamashita, 59, currently serving as a vice president, is expected to be elected at an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee on June 23. He will replace Shoji Muneoka, 71, who has led structural reforms of the organization from 2013 in the wake of a scandal involving violence against national women’s team members.

“Since becoming president, Muneoka has been working to make Mr. Yamashita his successor,” the source said. Following his retirement, Yamashita served as national men’s team coach and director of the AJJF’s National Team Committee.
