Israel Hernández of Cuba was 1992 and 1996 Olympic bronze medallist in Barcelona and Atlanta U65kg. Hernández was multiple Panam Champion. He won the Jose Ramon tournament in Cuba 6 times and was Cuban champion in U60, U65, U73kg. As a coach he various teams under him including the 2008 US Olympic judo team. His wife, Valerie Lafon Hernandez have a dojo in the north of San Diego. He is Project 2024 coach, along with Olympic medallists Jimmy Pedro, Travis Stevens, Kayla Harrison, and Marti Malloy.
