Shota Khabareli
Country: Soviet Union
|
Born: 26 December 1958 (65 years)
Judoka Shota Khabareli is the 1980 Olympic Champion. He won World bronze in 1983 U78kg and won four European Championships medals for the Soviet Union. "The Khabareli" technique stands out as a unique throw in judo because it is the only throw to have been recognised by the IJF that didn't have a Japanese name. It's actually a technique based on a Georgian wrestling move called "Gadavlia" and he wasn't the only Soviet player from Georgia using it. His compatriot David Bodaveli was as well versed with the technique as Khabareli was but he wasn't as famous.
