Hitoshi Saito was a greatness and double Olympic Champion in 1984 and 1988. Saito won the Asian Games in 1986 in Seoul. Later he became a successful but tough coach for his students. Saito was inducted into the IJF Hall of Fame in 2018. Following his competitive career, Saito was coach for the Japanese judo team during the 2004 Summer Olympics. He is a Kodokan ninth dan, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, by the Japanese Emperor.
