Judoka Vugar Shirinli of Azerbaijan claimed the gold medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. won the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2017. He won the African Open in 2016 in Tunis. He won his first World Cup in 2011 in Baku and won the EYOD, now EYOF in Belgrade in 2007. He fought a legendary match against Tadahiro Nomura as youngest and oldest participant. He won the PanAm Open in Lima and Buenos Aires in 2016. He captured a bronze medal at the European Open in Oberwart in 2018. He won the IBSA Grand Prix in Baku in 2019.
