Nico Kanning won two medals at German Championships in 2007 and 2008. As a junior he won the German title and A-tournament in St Petersburg among some international tournaments. As a senior he competed at various World Cups without a medal. Kanning quit on his top-level judo career in 2009 aged 25, deciding he wanted to move to Paris to join his girlfriend Lucie Louette, who would go on to win European gold in 2013. Nico became the ideal sparring partner for 10 time World Champion Teddy Riner.
