Judo in Egypt

Judo in Egypt is popular and with Mohammed Ali Rashwan who won Olympic silver in 1984 and Hisham Mesbah who took bronze in 2008 judo got Olympic medal winners. Rashwan was one of the important boosters with two World Championships medals in the eighties. Hisham Mesbah, Ramadan Darwish and Islam El Shehaby a new generation World Championships medallists represented Egypt. At the Rio Olympic Games Darwish was seventh. Famous Egyptian coach Bassel El Gharbawy won 11 African titles himself as judoka. But also Islam El Shehaby, Samah Ramadan, Ramadan Darwish and Heba Hefny won multiple winners. In 2005 the World Championships were held in Cairo.
