Nikoloz Sherazadishvili was born in Georgia but is the first male World Champion for Spain. He lives there since he was 14 but feels connected to both countries. "Niko Shera" as they call him in Spain is in between two flags. When the young Nikoloz was 14, his family moved to Spain for work, and Sherazadishvili joined the Brunete judo club just outside the capital Madrid. That club was run by three-time Olympian Joaquín Ruiz, or "Quino", who remains Sherazadishvili's coach to this day. Read more

Former lightweight World Champion Ami Kondo retires as judoka. Although the Nagoya native captured a 48kg World title at the 2014 world championships in Chelyabinsk and Olympic bronze, the tiny Kondo retires at the age of 25. In Russia she took the world title when she was just 19. Kondo ended up with bronze at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics as well as the 2015 and 2017 world championships in Astana and Budapest. Richárd Sipőcz is eager to take a medal in Budapest

Richárd Sipőcz stepped on the tatami last year as a two-time European youth champion at the Budapest Grand Prix , but he was already very successful, surprising everyone at the age of 18 by finally flying to the third step of the podium. Not only did he get to the podium, but jumped from 216th to 36th place. He won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships and a gold medal at the U23 European Championships and finishing fifth at the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf. Read more
