Guram Tushishvili poised to be one of the main challengers for Riner

Georgia's man of the moment Guram Tushishvili (GEO) was seen as a talent with promise when he was honing his skills as a junior over the last few years but nobody expected him to make the impression he's made on the IJF World Judo Tour this year. Tushishvili, 22, finished seventh at the 2015 Junior World Championships in the +100kg category and featured at senior events in 2015 and 2016 without capturing any attention. In Marrakech at the World Open Championships Tushishvili is one of the main challengers. Read more

European U23 Championships in Podgorica opportunity for new generation

Mattias Casse is the only World Junior Champion who appears at the European U23 Championships in Podgorica. The Belgian world champ is one of the favourites in the category U81kg and the highest seed. As usual a tough category with Anri Egutidze (POR), Fagan Guluzada (AZE), Dominik Druzeta (CRO), Jim Heijman (NED) and Nicklas Bloechl (GER) as medal contenders. Also home player Arso Milic is a well known fighter who won his first European medal in 2012 at the Cadet European Championships in Bar, also in Montenegro, the first major event in this relative young country. Stephan Hegyi perhaps the best teenage heavyweight prospect in the world

Teenage heavyweight contender Stephan Hegyi of Austria won his first IJF World Judo Tour medal in September when he took silver at the Zagreb Grand Prix. The 19-year-old won praise more for the positive manner in which he opposed his rival in the final than for the medal itself. Read more

Linda Bolder retires with pain in her heart

Israelian Dutch woman Linda Bolder announced her retirement. The 29-year old Bolder finished seventh at the Olympic Games in Rio. She won European titles in three different age categories at European Championships. She won European gold as cadet , junior and U23 and as senior she was runner up in 2013 behind Kim Polling. She won the Grand Slams of Paris & Tokyo but switched to Israel in 2015 and continued to win for gold for Israel. On her Facebook she explained her thoughts. Read more
