The preliminary matches of the World Open Championships in Marrakech saw some great battles and surprising results. Especially the lighter judokas such as Nikiforov and Granda excelled in this openweight category and qualified for the semi finals. The return of Ilias Iliadis was just great to see when he was opposed to Roy Meyer. The Greek came back for the new generation and the generous smile after his contest was full of warmth for judo. Draw of the World Open Championships in Marrakech

The World Championships Open Weight will take place in Marrakech in Morocco and among the 40 judoka some smashing first contests. What about a warmup match for Teddy Riner against Krakovetskii of Kyrgistan. If Riner wins he will meet with Guram Tushishvili of Georgia, the matches of all matches in the prerounds. Obviously way too early. If Riner gets past the Georgian, it should be smooth sailing until he is expected to meet with youngster Stephan Hegyi (AUT) or Temuulen Battulga for the top spot in his pool. Guram Tushishvili poised to be one of the main challengers for Riner

Georgia's man of the moment Guram Tushishvili (GEO) was seen as a talent with promise when he was honing his skills as a junior over the last few years but nobody expected him to make the impression he's made on the IJF World Judo Tour this year. Tushishvili, 22, finished seventh at the 2015 Junior World Championships in the +100kg category and featured at senior events in 2015 and 2016 without capturing any attention. In Marrakech at the World Open Championships Tushishvili is one of the main challengers. Read more

European U23 Championships in Podgorica opportunity for new generation

Mattias Casse is the only World Junior Champion who appears at the European U23 Championships in Podgorica. The Belgian world champ is one of the favourites in the category U81kg and the highest seed. As usual a tough category with Anri Egutidze (POR), Fagan Guluzada (AZE), Dominik Druzeta (CRO), Jim Heijman (NED) and Nicklas Bloechl (GER) as medal contenders. Also home player Arso Milic is a well known fighter who won his first European medal in 2012 at the Cadet European Championships in Bar, also in Montenegro, the first major event in this relative young country.
