Gideon van Zyl retires and thanks the world

South African judoka Gideon van Zyl announced to retire from judo. Van Zyl competed at World Championships and Olympic Games. Last year he won Commonwealth Games bronze. He was African Champion in 2011, 2013 and 2014 U73kg.

Gideon 'Jacques' Van Zyl couldn’t stop thanking everybody and most over his sport judo. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my official retirement from professional judo.!! Wow what a journey it has been. The people i have met and friends I have made..! My time has come and I have given everything to the sport and i do not regret one second! “

“I promise that I will give back to this wonderful sport and I will make sure we reach the heights we can! Thanks to my wonderful parents for giving me all the opportunities to reach my dream and non-stop support. To my amazing Girlfriend, to my friends and family, without you I would not have been where I am today. I look forward to an amazing journey going forward in my life and applying all I have learnt from our amazing sport! I end my career with a happy heart. “

Van Zyl travelled around the world since 2006 when he competed at World Junior Championships and continued with World Senior Championships in 2007. His highest World Ranking was 19 in April 2013.
