Pedro Guedes, the esteemed head coach of the German national judo team, has officially announced his retirement, marking the end of a remarkable career that has spanned over seven and a half years with the German Judo Federation (DJB). Originally from Brazil, Guedes has been a pivotal figure in German judo, contributing significantly to the development of the sport at various levels.

In a heartfelt resignation letter sent to the DJB, Guedes expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the opportunities and experiences he has had during his tenure. His last day of work will be December 31st, 2024.

43-Year old Guedes began his journey in Germany after transitioning from Canada, where he first took on the role of National Coach for the U21 men’s team. His dedication and expertise quickly led to his promotion as the head coach of the national men’s program, a position he has held with distinction. Reflecting on his time in Germany, Guedes acknowledged the challenges, hard work, and new experiences that have defined his career.

“I am deeply grateful for the support of the former DJB presidents Mr. Frese and Mr. Keller, as well as the current president Mr. Schynol and the former sports directors,” Guedes stated in his letter. He also expressed his respect and gratitude for the DJB’s current sports director, Mr. Paulat, whose commitment to judo he described as “remarkable.”

Guedes highlighted the unique diversity of the German sports system, praising the collaboration with the six BSPs, athletes, coaches, physiotherapists, and other key institutions, including the IAT, the police, the German Armed Forces, and the Coach Academy in Cologne. “These years of working and living in Germany have shown me how much potential and how many opportunities are open to the athletes, the coach, and their success,” he noted.

As a Brazilian adapting to life in Germany, Guedes faced numerous cultural differences but embraced the experience, investing in the professional and personal growth it offered. He emphasized the importance of professionalism and respect in his work, qualities that guided him throughout his journey.

In his closing remarks, Guedes thanked the athletes for their dedication and hard work, as well as the DJB staff, with special mentions for Nana and Frank, for their teamwork and support. He expressed his intention to continue following the success of German judo, both on and off the mat, even after his departure.

Pedro Guedes’ departure marks the end of an era for the DJB, but his legacy of commitment, professionalism, and respect will undoubtedly continue to inspire the next generation of judo athletes and coaches in Germany.
