A judo athlete's first tournament is one of the most exciting moments of their career. It's the result of years of hard work, devotion, and sacrifice. But it can also be intimidating! You may be nervous about your performance or worried about what kind of opponent(s) you'll face. Maybe you just don't know where to begin. That's where we come in. We're here to help you prepare for your first tournament and maybe win your first judo competition.

Understand the Tournament Rules

The rules of judo tournament ensure that every match is safe, fair, and competitive. They include everything from the duration of matches, scores for each action, and penalties to the different ways to win.

Each judo match only takes five minutes in international competitions. During regulation time, there are no additional rounds. However, if there's no winner after the regulation period has ended, judokas will have to compete in a sudden-death overtime match.

The match referees and the judges can award two types of penalties: Hansoku-make or Shido. A Hansoku-make is awarded for infringing significant rules. These may include misconduct like repeatedly violating rules or when you willingly injure your opponent.

A judge can award a Shido for minor infringements like playing too defensively and non-combativity. The first three Shidos serve as warnings and don't merit immediate disqualification.

Keep a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet will determine your performance as a judo player. You need adequate nutrition to reduce mental and physical stress, minimize lactic acid accumulation, and speed up your recovery rate.

The intensity of your training will determine the type and quantity of carbohydrates you require. With minimal glycogen depletion, they provide the energy you need to perform well for an extended period and train effectively. Go for complex carbohydrates like whole grain, oats, and sweet potatoes to allow sustained release of energy.

Ensure you take adequate proteins to enhance muscle repair and recovery and maintain lean mass. In addition, consider foods rich in vitamin C to maintain healthy collagen levels in the body. Collagen keeps the cartilage strong and helps in reducing injuries.

Prepare Your Equipment and Personal Gear

Have your equipment and personal gear ready before a judo tournament. You'll need a special uniform (judogi) that includes a cotton belt, light canvas pants, and a heavy jacket.

In addition to being comfortable, your uniform should allow you to move freely without being restricted. Ensure it's made from thick cotton material to maintain your performance on the mat and keep you safe.

Although wearing elbow pads is not mandatory, it's wise to have them during training. This will ensure you make it to the tournaments without injuries. Judo competitions don't require a lot of gear, so invest in the best quality to succeed.

Relax With Some Downtime

Judo sport require a lot of physical and mental strength. Sometimes, it's easy to get nervous before you start the tournament. In such moments, take a break from your day's activities. You can try relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing to increase the oxygen levels in your body. This will help improve your overall energy and remove the anxiety that comes along with competition.

Consider taking some time off from the intense judo training. You can focus on things that make you happy, like spending time with your family, watching movies, or playing video games.
