Olympic bronze medallist Sanne van Dijke was operated on her right elbow. Van Dijke had been suffering from "4 small pieces of bone floating around" in her elbow for several years, causing pain and discomfort. The judoka had hoped to undergo the surgery after her career, but last week, during a training camp in Austria, it bothered her again with stretching and bending. Therefore, after consulting specialists, it was decided to proceed with surgery.

The 27-year-old Van Dijke must now rest completely for a fortnight and will then focus on her rehabilitation. She hopes to be in action before the World Cup, from 11 May in Doha. Van Dijke is currently ranked No 2 in the world.

Van Dijke became world bronze medallist in 2021 and 2022 and was European Senior Champion in 2021 in Lisbon and 2017 in Warsaw U70kg. Last year she took the gold medal at the Grand Slam in Tbilisi in 2022 and captured 20 World Cup medals in her career.

Sane van Dijke is nominated for the moment of the year award of the IJF.
