France and the Netherlands were the strongest teams at the Junior European Cup in Nanterre this weekend. The French were expected to win the majority of the medals and claimed six titles, the Dutch athletes came close with four cup titles.

On Sunday the French lightweight women were strong whereas the male lightweights also showed to be the top of Europe. In the division U48kg it was an all French final, of course with Pauline CCuq, we saw her so many times. She claimed the gold after she defeated another strong French asset, Lea Beres (FRA). Beres was a bit unlucky taking her second silver medal this season, also in Lignano and she is the only athlete with two lost finals, but many would sign for two finals. Aitana Diaz Hernandez (ESP) and Nohade Riadi (NED) took the bronze medal in a rather small field of 13 young women.

There was a bit more competition U52kg, but with 18 not even so much. Chloe Devictor of France was poised to win the gold and despite that pressure, she did win in Nanterre, close to Paris. Again an all French final against Alya De Carvalho. Tatum Keen (GBR) and Meghan Vo (FRA) bagged the bronze medals in this division.

The gold for women U57kg was for Dutch talent Julie Beurskens who proved that she can step up a weight category as last year she fought U52kg. Beurskens was able to defeat Maelenn Cotard (FRA) in the final and even shake off her Dutch teammate Elin Henninger (NED) who had been so successful, and let’s face it, bronze isn’t so bad for a good finger practice in France. Henninger shared the podium with Aline Rosset of Switzerland. The Dutch seemed to develop a bit more choice in U57kg as also in the senior category Pleuni Cornelisse makes steps. She took World junior bronze last year.

The men were fighting in the heavier categories, starting with U81kg where Azerbaijan’s Ismayil Zamanov dominated the tournament in a field of 24 men, much less than previous European Cups this season in Coimbra, Lignano, Athens and Poznan. Zamanov defeated Vsevolod Klymov of Ukraine in the final. Another Azeri Omar Rajabli took bronze as well as Swiss Aurelien Bonferroni (SUI).

Vugar Talibov of Azerbaijan added another gold medal for his country. In the final he overcame Aleksa Mitrovic (FRA). Dutchman Axel Heeren and Frenchman David Ali came third. Talibov won the European Cup in Poznan in April

Again Kilian Kappelmeier took the gold, he keeps developing in this category U100kg where he won the European Cup for seniors two weeks ago in Dubrovnik. In Nanterre he confirmed his form, which isn’t easy to switch from senior success to a competitive junior tournament. In the final, the German defeated Mathias Anglionin (FRA). George Udsilauri (GER) and Ruslan Nasirli (AZE) won their lost match as well and took bronze.

Dutch heavyweight Jules Blom was penciled in for a medal, but took again the gold. In the final +100kg he beat Paavo Ploehnert (GER). Kanan Nasibov (AZE) and Abdelkader Belarchi (FRA) took the bronze. One month ago in Lignano Blom won the tournament as well.

Nine athletes in the IJF Junior World Tour have now won two tournaments.

The tour for juniors moves on fast, next week in Kaunas (LTU), then to Malaga and in June to Graz.
