Grand Slam Düsseldorf cancelled for financial reasons

The German Judo Federation informed the IJF that the Grand Slam at the beginning of June has to be cancelled.

"We very much regret that we cannot host the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf," writes spokesman Frank Doetsch to the IJF. The reason is mainly financial. Due to Corona, only significantly fewer spectators are allowed into the hall - and this only with a significantly increased deployment of personnel. Based on the experience of the current tournaments, 20-30% fewer participants are expected and the subsequent training camp is cancelled . This results in a clear underfunding, which is neither justifiable nor communicable to the members given the current decline in members.

"A higher level of debt than originally planned would not be justified to the German judoka, our members, and would not be accepted, especially since it would also put the association in financial difficulties for which we cannot be responsible," Doetsch continues.

Nevertheless, the DJB will continue to support the IJF in the future and be open to talks about the implementation of the Grand Slam in the coming years.
