14 Aug 2004 13:30

Japanese victories in both of today’s Judo events means that Japan have now won a total of 100 Olympic gold medals. The Men’s 60kg class was won by Tadahiro Nomura, who became the first judoka ever to win three Olympic gold medals. His compatriot, Ryoko Tani won the Women’s 48kg class and became the first female judoka to win two Olympic golds.

Judo is not the number one sport for Japanese golds but stands in second place behind Artistic Gymnastics. Gold medals have been won by Japan in 11 sports in total.
