Akil Gjakova wins first male European title for Kosovo
Akil Gjakova finally captured that precious European title at the European Judo Championships in Portugal's capital of Lisbon on Saturday. Just like his sister in 2018, Akil won the title for his country Kosovo. Still party in the family as Nora Gjakova took bronze on Friday. Gjakova is the first men for his country to win the title.
In the final Gjakova defeated Israeli judoka Tohar Butbul won a silver medal. Tohar reached the final after defeating his Turkish opponent Bilal Ciloglu in a 6:18-minute fight. Gjakova overcame Swiss talent Nils Stump in the semi. The Swiss man defeated Giovanni Esposito and took the bronze. The experienced Russian Musa Mogushkov defeated Turkish judoka Ciloglu for the bronze.
Not many surprises this U73kg class but always a few such as Lasha Shavdatuashvili who lost before the quarter final against Vadzim Shoka and a fast loss for both French contenders Chaine and Axus.
Swedish title defender Victor Sterpu didn’t compete in Lisbon and 2019 champion Tommy Macias reached the last eight but lost in the repechage and finished seventh. Ferdinand Karapetian (ARM) was European champion in 2018 and lost in the third round.
